Coupang Advertising: How Ads Work for Foreign Brands

Coupang advertising guide: clicks that turn into sales

Short answer: Coupang advertising is pay-per-click product ads inside Coupang. You pick an ad type by goal, set a daily budget and a target ROAS, and Coupang places your products in search results and product pages.

Most English guides to Coupang ads stop at manual versus automatic campaigns. That split is real, but it leaves out the settings that decide whether your budget turns into sales. Those are the ad type, the target ROAS, and how you split products across campaigns.

This guide covers where Coupang ads appear and which ad type fits which goal. It then walks through a first campaign, the budget and ROAS, and how to read results. It ends with what to check before you run ads yourself or hand them to a partner.

What is Coupang advertising and where do the ads appear?

Coupang advertising mostly means Product Ads: your listed products shown to shoppers searching for similar items. You pay only when a shopper clicks.

According to Coupang’s Seller University article on Product Ads (January 2024), Product Ads are charged per click. The same article says they appear in search results, on product pages, and on Coupang’s main pages.

You run ads from the same seller account you use to list products. Coupang’s setup article for global sellers (April 2024) starts in WING, Coupang’s seller center, under the Ads Center menu. That means a Global Selling seller can advertise without a separate ad account.

What this means for you: an ad sends shoppers to your product page, not to a landing page. If the page has weak photos, few reviews, or a high price, the ad pays for clicks that do not convert.

Which Coupang ad type fits your goal?

Coupang groups its ads by goal: growing sales, finding new customers, and building awareness. Most foreign brands start with a sales goal.

Coupang ad types by goal: AI Smart Ad, sales optimization ad, launch ad, manual ad, new-customer ad, and search brand video ad

Coupang Ads’ solution overview (Chinese edition, checked October 2026) lists six options. Coupang publishes its ads guide in Korean and Chinese only, so the English names below are our translations.

Ad typeWhat Coupang automatesUse it when
AI Smart AdProducts, keywords, and bidsYou want Coupang to promote whichever of your items shoppers search for most
Sales optimization adKeywords and bids, based on your target ROASYou want to push chosen products at a steady return
Launch adBids, to spend the budget on maximum exposureA new product needs its first sales
Manual adNothing; you set keywords and bidsYou already know which search terms sell
New-customer adBids, with banners and videoYou want shoppers who never bought from you (open to some advertisers only)
Search brand video adNothing; you set the brand message, keywords, and bidsYou want brand awareness at the top of search results in your category

The same overview says the launch ad also shows outside search results, such as on the home page and category pages. If your product has no sales history yet, that wider placement is the point of the launch ad.

Which Coupang campaign settings do sellers most often get wrong?

Ads Center walks you through the setup screens. The settings that cause trouble are the run period, which campaign each product sits in, and the detailed settings.

Start with the run period. Coupang Ads’ AI Smart Ad guide warns that a fixed end date can stop ads by surprise, and a restarted campaign may need to optimize again. It recommends “No End Date” for ongoing campaigns; you can still pause them by hand.

Next, decide where each product sits. The same guide allows one AI Smart Ad campaign per account, and it leaves out products already running in a sales optimization campaign. Put your lead products in a sales optimization campaign and let AI Smart Ad cover the rest, so the two never compete for one product.

Then check the detailed settings. Coupang’s setup article lets you extend ads to channels outside Coupang and exclude keywords that bring clicks but no sales.

The detailed settings also include a “Discount Coupon” option. According to the same article, Coupang funds those coupons in full, at no extra cost to the advertiser. Read the current terms in Ads Center before you rely on it, since the article dates from April 2024.

How much should you budget, and how is ROAS measured?

You set a daily budget, pay per click, and judge results by ROAS: ad sales divided by ad spend. Coupang Ads’ metrics glossary counts sales up to 14 days after a click.

Coupang ad budget and ROAS: daily budget ₩10,000 to ₩1 billion, at least ₩30,000 advised, ROAS is ad sales divided by ad spend, 14-day attribution

Coupang Ads’ AI Smart Ad guide and its sales optimization ad guide set the daily budget between ₩10,000 and ₩1 billion. Under those guides, budget left unspent on one day can be used on days short of budget in the same month.

The minimum is not a recommendation. The January 2024 Seller University article advises at least ₩30,000 a day, or your ads may run out of funds and lose impressions.

Coupang defines ROAS as ad sales divided by ad spend. Its example: ₩1 million in ad spend that brings ₩5 million in ad sales is a 500% ROAS.

Under Coupang Ads’ metrics glossary, a sale counts toward an ad when the shopper buys within 14 days of clicking. The count includes the advertised product and your other products bought after the click.

What this means for you: set the target ROAS from your margin, not from a round number. If your margin after Coupang’s commission is thin, a low ROAS can grow sales while losing money on every order.

How do you read Coupang ad results and adjust?

Look at impressions, click-through rate, and ROAS per product. Each one points to a different fix: budget, the product page, or the ROAS target.

Coupang’s glossary treats a low click-through rate as a sign that your thumbnail, price, or reviews do not attract shoppers. That is a product page problem, so more budget will not fix it.

  • If impressions stay low, raise the daily budget or move a new product to a launch ad.
  • If impressions are high but clicks are low, change the main image, price, or review count first.
  • If clicks are high but ROAS is low, check the product page and lower bids or raise the target ROAS.
  • If ROAS is high but spend stays low, the target may be too strict; lower it in small steps.

Keep each product in one campaign. The Seller University article says not to run several Product Ads campaigns for the same product. The sales optimization guide also advises removing products already registered in another campaign.

Large catalogs also hit a size limit. A sales optimization campaign holds up to 500 products, according to its guide, so split bigger ranges by category.

Should you run Coupang ads yourself or use a partner?

You can run them yourself from WING. A partner helps most when you need Korean product pages, daily bid changes, and someone accountable for the ad spend.

Coupang Ads runs a certified partner program for agencies. WPP Media’s announcement (November 2025) describes it as recognizing agencies that understand Coupang’s full-funnel ad solutions and performance operations.

OSC has been a Coupang Ads partner since 2024, and we work with more than 300 brands. In our sales agency model, OSC invests the Coupang ad spend. A Japanese natto brand we imported once ranked first in Coupang’s natto category.

That brand started with chilled stock, Japanese-only packaging, and no Korean importer. We imported it, added the Korean label, stored it cold, and opened the Coupang store.

In our experience, ads work after those basics are in place, not instead of them. Our sell on Coupang page shows how that setup works.
